Making Music is simple with GarageBand

Meet Sam Beebe on the Web, Instagram, and on Spotify!

Bio:  You may have met me in an MIS class as Mr. Beebe, your substitute teacher, but I wear many other hats, as they say. I am also a writer, and a musician, and I was a professor of writing at New York University for 10 years before moving here with my family several years ago. Some of you will know my wife, Viki Peitchev, who teaches English in the Middle School, and some may even know our son, Niko, who is in Grade 1 and regularly pops into Ms. Peitchev’s homeroom in the mornings.

As a writer, I am just now finishing up a non-fiction book, for which I hope to find an interested publisher. As a musician, I have released two albums and several singles, the most recent being an album released (on all streaming platforms) in February of 2024. I have countless hours of experience making music with GarageBand and Logic Pro, which I am excited to share with those of you who would like to begin (or continue) experimenting with making your own music and collaborating with others. And if you get into it and want further , I could be available for follow-up sessions as a private tutor in music production.

Workshop Description:

Do you love music? Have you ever dreamt about making your own songs, or collaborating on making music with others, but don’t know where to begin? With GarageBand it’s easier than you might think. You don’t even need to know how to play an instrument! In this workshop we will go over the basics of building original songs in GarageBand. If we concentrate closely and the session flows well without distraction, I believe we can cover most, if not all, of these fundamentals:

* Navigating the software in general
* Laying down digital drum tracks
* Recording vocals or live instruments using the built-in Apple microphone (or external mics)
* Understanding how to use MIDI (I will explain!) to unlock access to a limitless world of sounds and virtual instruments
* Experimenting with the Apple Loops library
* Learning how to use plug-ins (again, I will explain!) to shape the sounds in your tracks like a pro, with effects like auto-tune, distortion, reverb, arpeggiation, and more.

By the end of the hour you’ll be ready to start experimenting with making songs in GarageBand on your own. You’ll be equipped not only for working on music solo, but also to begin collaborating with friends, harnessing the multitude of musical talents at MIS. And once you’re happy with something you’ve made, you can share it as far and wide as you please!
