SLP Stories: Epic Athletics Weekend

Written by MIS Communications | Mar 21, 2024 1:30:26 PM

Last weekend, the MIS Athletics community really rose to the occasion for the biggest sporting weekend of the 2023.24 school year. Simultaneously, we sent seven teams to locations across Europe to compete in various ISST tournaments, we hosted 8 teams here in the FAB for the Middle School Boys' Basketball ISST tournament, and we provided for skiers from across Europe including our very own Ski Team at the Heinrich Harrer Cup held in Austria. What a weekend!

Under normal circumstances, enabling our athletes to compete in all this at the same time would have been a challenge. However, the poor snow situation and the transportation strikes made it all the more complex, and our fantastic network of parents, coaches, MIS Faculty and staff and community partners really rose to the occasion for the benefit of our young people.

In the ISST Basketball tournaments, we saw impressive success from our Junior Varsity Girls' team who placed 2nd in their tournament in Brussels! Congratulations to this team for showing such dedication, commitment and team spirit through some very challenging games and we look forward to seeing their Silver medals around school. Our Swim Team also performed extremely well in London, with Hania and Elias collecting medals in several finals and plenty of other successes too. We were also well-represented in Basketball in various cities by our Varsity Boys and Girls, our JV Boys and of course our Middle School Boys and Girls.

In the Heinrich Harrer Cup, our very own MIS Ski Team placed 2nd among tough competition from several schools who have more regular access to snowy slopes than we do! They were delighted to perform so well and their team spirit is riding high as we close the Ski Season.

Special thanks for this remarkable weekend go to Mr. Bowerman and Ms. Erhardt for organising the entire Ski Race together with SC Starnberg, and to all their many helpers from the MIS community and beyond. Additionally, to Mr Derda, our Athletics Coordinator, and his support network for coordinating all of the travelling teams as well as the two MIS-hosted events simultaneously. Furthermore, to all Coaches for their commitment and hard work this season. And finally, to all MIS Wildcat athletes and their parents, and our Sportverein members, for their continual support of Athletics at MIS.

Athletes and their parents will enjoy the Recognition Evening on Tuesday next week to share and commemorate these fantastic achievements together.
