MIS offers two high-commitment, high-reward 'super-SLP' activities, one of which is the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award for Senior School students.
The International Award is the international version of the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh Award.
Established in the UK in 1956, the Programme is based around three Levels – Bronze, Silver, Gold – each successive one requiring a greater degree of commitment and challenge.
To gain an Award, Participants must complete activities in four Sections: Voluntary Service, Expedition, Skills, and Physical Recreation.
Find Yourself
Through offering the Award as a co-curricular activity, students at MIS have an opportunity to develop life skills, which are at the centre of learning at MIS.
Heal Yourself
First Aid training is a requirement of the program as participants will find themselves in challenging environments and situations.
Feed Yourself
An essential skill of any survivalist is cooking and preparing food. Award participants have many opportunities to challenge and develop their culinary skills around a campfire.
Get Lost
The Award program prepares participants to get lost and know what to do about it.
Go With A Goal
Each Expedition includes a team goal – emphasising the collaborative nature of the Expedition requirement of the program.
You Are The Guide
Award team members are encouraged toward independence and benefit from the feeling of remoteness. Intrusions by adults are kept to a minimum.
Better Yourself
The goal of the program is to empower Award participants to make a difference to other people’s lives and their community, be fitter and healthier, make new friends, and have memories to last a lifetime.
Challenge Yourself
At the heart of the Expedition is the opportunity for a young person to engage in activities that require determination, physical effort, perseverance, problem solving and cooperation.
Bronze, Silver, & Gold
Achieving an Award will give you skills, confidence and an edge over others when you apply for college, university or a job.
