Life in the Middle
Middle School is known as a time of transition and big changes. Therefore, well-being is of major focus, in all of its dimensions. Keep scrolling to learn how MIS's Middle School intentionally fosters social, emotional, intellectual, physical, and environmental well-being.
This virtual open house video overviews life and learning across the entire school and features interviews between Principals and students in each school. Education for the Real World
The Middle School curriculum is a registered IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), designed for students between the ages of 11 and 16 years. The MYP is a challenging framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world. It builds upon the knowledge, skills and attitudes developed in the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) and prepares students to meet the academic challenges of the IB Diploma Programme (DP). At the end of Grade 10, students sit the eAssessments, i.e., the external MYP exams.
Supporting Your Child
As Middle School is a time of major transition for all students on top of the fact that the majority of students at MIS are also transitioning from other schools around the world, the home-to-school partnership is essential. Families are encouraged to stay engaged through regular Parent-Principal Forums, Parent-Teacher-Student conferences, Weekly Bulletin updates, and access to the Middle School counselor.
House System & Grade Trips
Middle School supports students through transition by understanding the importance of friendship and belonging. To foster a strong community, each grade starts the year with an overnight trip, an experience designed to encourage bonding and deepen friendships. To foster community across grades 5 - 8, each student is assigned to a 'House'. The six Houses in the Middle School compete against each other to win points. Win or lose, the House System encourages students to work together and collaborate.
Change-makers & Solutionarians
Middle Schoolers participate in and organize multiple philanthropic initiatives each year, including the Grade 8 Winter Market. The annual Market is a massive undertaking, with students spending months in the Makers' Lab building carnival games and creating gifts. All proceeds go to philanthropic initiatives such as The Tanzania Project. In May of 2024, students participating in the Eco Committee will host a Solutionary Summit, which aims to inspire youth and to nurture students in developing solutions to local problems (e.g. plastic or electronic waste). Around 150 external students from 20 international schools around the world plan to attend.
Makers' Laboratory
Our expansive Middle & Senior School Makers' Laboratory features a media production studio used for live-streaming, podcasting, and student-produced audio and visual production. The Lab also includes a bike repair station, an outdoor area for gardening and habitat-building, electronics, robotics, multiple 3D printers, 3D pens, sewing machines, looms and materials for textile creation, pottery wheels, a kiln, laser-cutters, wood working tools, and much more. Middle and Senior School students have access to the Makers' Lab for class projects, clubs, and after-school-activities.
MYP & STEAM
The IB curriculum constantly challenges students to utilize the Design-thinking Approach to solve problems, prototype, and create. Middle Schoolers are immersed in the arts and design through classes dedicated to STEAM learning. The main Middle School building houses a food design kitchen, multiple science labs, and music rooms. The Language Arts & Design Center (LADC) is a separate building that houses woodworking and design classrooms, art studios, as well as the Maker's Lab. Drama classes are held in the Senior School's black box theatres and in the Performing Arts Center.
